Opening Ceremonies

Every WTSDA championship opens with the same Master of Ceremonies (M.C.) protocol, regardless of venue or region. As a judge, you won't run the ceremony, but you're expected to know it — it sets the tone of discipline and respect that carries into how you're expected to conduct yourself in the ring, and instructors will expect you to recognize when the ceremony has concluded and competition is about to start.

1. M.C. lines participants up by rank, with clapping.
2. A pre-designated senior Dan member leads warm-up.
3. The entire group performs a basic hyung together.
4. The Grandmaster enters; the M.C. calls "Cha ryut, Kwan Chang Nim e kyung yet."
5. A pre-designated individual gives the invocation.
6. The M.C. leads the full salutation sequence: Cha ryut, Kukgi bae rye, Baro, Muk yum, Baro, national anthem, WTSDA anthem, Five Codes, Kwan Chang Nim e kyung yet, Sah Bum Nim e kyung yet.
7. Participants separate into two sides for the return of cups.
8. The M.C. gives opening remarks.
9. The M.C. introduces the Regional Director or another designated individual, who introduces other Masters and guests.
10. The M.C. introduces the Grandmaster.
11. The Grandmaster gives a welcome address.
12. The M.C. moderates awards and presentations (Hall of Fame, scholarships, building fund, etc.).
13. The M.C. and assistants facilitate Dan presentations: performances by newly promoted Dan members, recognition of newly certified Dan members, the Black Belt oath, and family recognition/pins.
14. The Grandmaster facilitates Sah Dan / Master presentations.
15. The M.C. clears the floor.
16. Masters' demonstration, if applicable.
17. The Creativity winner's demonstration, if applicable.
18. The M.C. lines participants up again.
19. A pre-designated individual explains the competition rules.
20. A senior competitor leads the championship oath.
21. Competition begins.
