Why this division is different

All the rules for general competition, hyung, and dae ryun still apply, but Tiny Tiger and Little Dragon divisions add their own rules on top. The key difference from youth and adult divisions: no numerical scores except a perfect score are given for hyung, and there are no eliminations in dae ryun. The goal is simply to give the youngest members a chance to compete and get ready for competition once they reach the gup ranks.

Hyung competition

  1. The center judge lines up the students and explains the procedures, using language this age group will understand.
  2. The scorekeeper collects all tickets and takes roll call from the competition sheet — calling protocol is the same as standard hyung competition.
  3. Unlike Gup and Dan competitors, competitors in this age group may perform any hyung they know. If they don't know one, they're instructed to perform a series of techniques they're comfortable with instead.
  4. After each competitor performs, judges score with a perfect score or specific scorecards. Once everyone has competed, the center judge lines them up and tells them what a good job they did.
  5. All students who competed receive a participation medal — there are no specific awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or co-3rd place.

Dae ryun competition

  1. The center judge lines up competitors as in a normal sparring match, matching by similar age/height and avoiding same-studio pairings where possible. This age group's dae ryun uses no elimination system.
  2. Either head gear with a protective face shield, or head gear plus a mouthpiece, is required.
  3. Using four belt pieces of like color per competitor (provided by the head table), the center judge slips two loosely into the front of each competitor's dobohk belt and two into the back.
  4. The center judge lines the two competitors up facing each other and explains: whoever grabs all four pieces from the opponent's belt first — or has pulled the most after a two-minute time limit — wins.
  5. Matches proceed using all the same commands and rules as a normal sparring division.
  6. After everyone has had a turn, competitors line up and are praised for their effort. All competitors receive participation medals.
